For a while now the car has been acting funny, it would make funny sounds kinda like popcorn popping and then buckle and jump and act like it either has too much or not enough fuel, often times I can smell fumes of fuel entering the vechile, it usally only happens after car has been warmed up or during hot peak hours, usally when cold not much if any problems, one of the things it did not want to do was shift gears so I would have to down shift and then up shift to get it to change gears, now the car wont even start up at all it turns over but no firing up, aamco said that it could be the fuel pump or vent of fuel tank, local fix it shop says impossible.

besides pulling it out of the tank to test the fuel lines or pump what other way could I tell if the pump is acting up and second if it is the pump how easy would it be to pull it out myself and put it back in? Any and all help will be much appericated thanks in advanced joe

Checking fuel pressure that what would determine if fuel pump any good (no need for its removal )

I would do a compression test from sound of thing the engine was overheated
check timing belt
