Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Ford Escort Front Wheel Drive Automatic 157000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
My vehicle has been having a few issues lately. We recently moved across the state and half way across the check engine light came on and it started making some weird sounds. After a long process we got it brought the rest of the way and had the code checked at Schucks where they said it was either the spark plugs or the spark plug cables. So we replaced both (they were looking bad) and my brother put them in (without a timing gun...which might be a problem I heard). The car started working fine again for about a month.
Just this week I was pulling out of our parking spot went to put my foot on the accelerator and the car stalled. When I tried turning the car on again it made a sound as if it was turning over (so not the clicking sound of a dead battery) but it just wasn't catching that final rev that the car makes when it starts. After a few attempts I finally got it to start again only to have it die when I accelerated again. Some how I was able to get it on again with enough luck (I think I held down the brake and pressed the gas only slightly) I was able to get the car back into our parking spot.
The checking coolant light has been on for a while even after we flushed the coolant and replaced it all. Oil leve is just fine, just put in a new air filter.
So.....any ideas? For the moment we will probably have to have it towed to a shop to get some work done (I am in no way a mechanic) but I'm just curious if I can come equipped with some idea of what it could be.
