I have the same problem after having my very good personal mechanic not being able to remove the Speed Sensor I took it to the dealer where after a few hours and a charge of $100 for failing they told me that the entire transmission needed to be removed in order to get to the sensor. At that cost they recommended buying a rebuilt transmission.
Not good news. I wonder if anyone out there has made an extraction tool for this specific problem common with Escorts of this era. My car is a 1997 Escort with 82,000 that sat for about a year when a family member stopped driving it. Then when put back into service this issue plus rusted transmission line/leak became apparent. I guess the dealer does not know everything and they will charge you big time for their failures!
