1997 Ford Escort Replace front brake pads

Brakes problem
1997 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 110 K miles

With piston pressed in, I cannot get new pads in. They seem too thick. I removed caliper. Cannot re-install with just outer pad (no shim), not enuf clearance. Are caliper bushings my problem? It needs to move out about 1/16 or so.

If piston pushed all the way
make sure you have the correct pads for the car
compare them to old pads
caliper slider pin should be able to move easily by hand if not remove clean and lube

Thanks for fast reply. Two brands of pads were identical. I discovered that using tire iron I could lever caliper in & out in relation to rotor. Here is my method:
1. Lever piston & caliper in. Replace inner pad.
2. Lever caliper out until inner pad engages. Replace outer pad.
With thick new pads & shims, clearance is almost zero. I used piece of soda can to protect rotor. michi/va beach
