how do you adjust the rear drum brakes on the 1997 ford escort

on the 97 there is no rubber plug and there is no manual adjuster to access it would be directly below the wheel cylinder at the bottom of the shoes there isnt one there.i was told they are automatic adjusters

If you look at the rear (backing plate) of the brakes, you will see a black rubber plug. Remove the plug and then you will gain access to the adjuster.
