1997 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Changed out the fuel and the car ran for about 20 minutes. change out the fuel pressure regulator and the ran for about 15 minutes. before I changed the fuel pressure regulator I connected a fuel pressure test gauge to fuel rail and I had zero pressure. After changing the fuel pressure regulator I had zero fel pressure but the car ran. what could be the problem?
