1996 Ford Escort tail lights going out all of a sudden

I have a 96 escort that one day the tail lights and brake lights just poof went out, I was told it could be 1 of 4 things the fuse is poped, the stoplight switch has gone bad, or the bulbs have all burned out, or a wiring issue. Please help I dont have alot of cash to keep forking out to keep this poor car running and I dont want to have to go out and buy everything just to find out it is 1 of the cheapest things to fix.

Check fuses and bulbs as a 1st step
then check if you are getting power check ground
u need a test light
to do the test

I have checked the fuses and the bulbs all is good there, next step I am going to get a tester to see if there is power going to the sockets for the lights, then I will in turn change the stoplight switch for safe measrue
