plain jane ford escort starts ok, but idles down to rough / stumble idle. compression check ok, no bad valves per vacuum guage. replaced idle air control valve, no help. vacuum guage swings wide when idling - looking at timing problem ? if so-why and what part ?

Check the PCV/EGR valves and throttle position/MAF sensors
