1995 Ford Escort unusual brake pad wear

1995 Ford Escort 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

67000 miles on my escort wagon I noticed a grinding sound coming from the right front. After pulling the wheel off the brake pads were worn down to bear metal. I put new pads on and then pulled the left front to change those pads as well. There was hardly any wear at all, the pads were almost as thick as the new ones! Why could this be? Do I have a problem?

when the pads were last changed was both sides changed ? does the vehicle pull to one side when braking ?
