1995 Ford Escort Sudden loud engine noise

My 1995 Ford Escort suddenly started running loudly. It only runs loudly in drive, not reverse or idle. It runs fine, the fluids are fine, but the engine is loud. The muffler appears to be normal. What could cause this?

Check for exhaust leak up front by the engine and manifold to pipe gasket
