Is is true that the oxygen sensor stops working on escorts after 100,000 miles and is it even worth it to replace it?

You only replace it when the "check engine" light is ON and the code is oxygen sensor related. Ford recommends changing it every 100,000 miles but why replace it if it is working fine.
