1995 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have just been told that my escort has a blown head gasket, and that I have to have the heads ground or something like that. The car will not start and the guy fixing the car put on a new timing belt. For the cost, close to a thousand, for the new repair, its not worth it. I'm just wondering, am I getting the straight scoop, or can I just put a new head gasket in and go about my way.
As you can tell I am not a car guy. The car will not start now and I had to have it towed to the garage after it stalled, now it will not start at all.I am just trying to check all my options.
thanks

I would say its not worth the money to fix have it fixed
if its something you like doing on the side
it s different story
I would look for another car
once they open it you ll never know what they going to find and the price may go up
good luck

Were you driving and belt broke? If yes your car has an interference engine that means when belt brakes the pistons strike and bend the valves. That is why it won't start. @Cost $1500+
