1994 Ford Escort loss of electrical power

when ignition turned on, all relevant lights appear on the panel. when key turned to start there is a click then a total loss of electrical power. If I disconnect the battery then reconnect I get power back, sometimes it will then start, but I may have to disconnect & reconnct the battery several times

this sounds like bad batt connections or bad connection at the starter solenoid
