1993 Ford Escort 4 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Manual 95000 miles

I have a 1993 Ford Escort. I recently bought it for my daughter.

The clutch was just replaced. When I try to go into first gear it is difficult to get into gear. I sometimes must turn the car off to get it into gear. When I let the clutch out to take off it chatters. It doesn't do this in any other gear. It is also difficult to get into reverse sometimes. What is causing the clutch to chatter?

Thank you for any help you can provide. The car is needed desperately.

Thank you again

Hi there,

start by inspecting the clutch hydraulics foe a leak, (master cylinder and slave cylinder) replace and re bleed as required, The chatter is often caused by a new clutch and a flywheel that has not been re machined, old fly wheels develop hot spots and are often glazed up, also a very cheap inferior clutch assembly may have been installed. There is no manual clutch adjustment on these hydraulic clutches.
