I have a 93 ford escort. When I go to take off the transmission wants to shift in neutral. Or not want to shift in first gear. I have to manually shift it in neutral and back to drive to get it to shift. It don't do it all the time just ever now and then. What could be causing the problem?

Start by checking shifter cable and its adjustment
