1991 Ford Escort Engine running poorly and lost the muffler

My Escort Pony ran fine on the way to work this morning, however after stopping at a stop sign this afternoon, the engine suddenly started running very loud and poorly. Once I got home, I realized the muffler had fallen off. I checked all the fluids, and they were fine. Would the missing muffler cause the car to run poorly?

Hi there,

normally this would just sound very loud but you will get a change in tune, I would get the exhaust fixed then do a tune and check the ECU for any unresolved fault codes, start here.
