1991 Ford Escort E-Brake released but Signal light stays on

1991 Ford Escort 4 cyl Manual 78000 miles

I started the car this morning, released the e-brake and noticed the signal light stayed on. I pulled the brake, killed the engine and started over and still the light remained on.
