1988 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

this car reaches about 40mph and then starts to jerk really bad. The rpm's wannna act like the car doesnt want to gear up. Any advice on what it is and how to fix it?

Are the RPM's raising and the trans not shifting? If so, have the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) tested.
