Whe my engine is hot my exhaust emits black smoke, my oil level is dropping slowly so i know im burning it but where should i start to look for the problem?

check cylinder compression .. check for leaking valve seals .. leaking piston rings etc.

Thanks Dave, it's actually not a Ford Escort but an Ingersoll Rand ground compactor! The symtoms and the solutions should be the same though! Once again, thanks for your help.
