Engine shuts down

The engine cuts out while driving 20 mph. It happens three or four times a week. The engine does not start easily either. When the car is running it is fine, no noticeable problems, no misses, plenty of power. Sometimes when I turn it off it will not start. After five minutes it starts like nothing happened. New coils, new sparks, throttle cleaned, idle control valve cleaned.

Hello, I am Danny.

I suspect your fuel pump may be weak/failing. Best thing to do is perform a fuel pressure test. If you do not have access to a tester your local auto parts stores have a loaner program and will rent you one. It attaches to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. With the key on engine off the system should be 35-65 P.S.I. I have attached a tutorial showing what is involved for the testing procedure. Hi, fuel pressure was good, I have changed fuel filter, spark plugs coils cleaned throttle body I use FORSCAN no trouble codes today. Turned off at 40 mph. Usually it turns off when I get off leg from gas pedal.

This sounds like a typical crankshaft angle sensor going out which will not trigger and trouble code. Here is a guide to walk you through the steps and the location of the sensor on your car below:

On occasion, while in reverse, it's as if my battery stops sending power to the car, it stalls, and my oil and battery light come on. I put the car in park, turn it off, start it back up and it runs fine.

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

My wife drives the same rig.

You can have it off, cleaned, and back on----in 30 minutes or less or the the 1st guy will bring you a pizza for free! lol

Please follow the advice I gave you in the first response and don't let the subsequent response confuse you. He insists on confusing people I'm working with. The throttle body and throttle plate is what I asked you to clean. You can remove the IAC also if you wish but following my instructions should get both things.

My 2003 Ford Escape xlt check engine light is on. We just had the fuel pump replaced and a fuel filter. The same day as it was replaced, the check engine came on right after we got gas. My husband drove our car to NJ today and on the way home, the engine cut out. Just need to know what is wrong. Seems as soon as something is fixed, light comes again and it is something new.

After engine gets hot-10 to 15 minutes driving- it just cuts off while going down the road. It will not restart
till it sits for maybe two hours. After it sits, it cranks and runs fine.

First time it stopped I had it towed.
Second time, It was left side of the road. I went back in two hours and it
started fine. I was trying to get some ideas without breaking down beside the road again. No chance to check fuel or fire.
