2002 Ford Escape Temp gauge

My temp gauge goes up then just drops down. Then goes back up and operates fine. I was told maybe it was the thermostat. What do you think and how easy is it to replace?

I don't think its your thermostat, I think its your engine coolant temperature sensor or engine temperature sensor. Wich ever one your vehicle has.
