2001 Ford Escape 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My car has blown 2 EGR valves in the last 48 hours. It will not go faster than 40mph eventhough I am pressing the gas petal. The truck shakes horribly and makes the sound of wanting to stall but doesn't. There is no engine light on. The oil has been changed on a regular basis. Nobody can seem to figure out what to do to fix this problem. Someone please help.

When you say it has blowen 2 egr valves, what happened to them? Also, how many miles are on the vehicle? Has the timing belt ever been replaced?

Was it the EGR or a gasket that blew out? Also, how many miles are on the vehicle?

It was the ERG vavle and I believe that my truck had 37,000 miles or better on it.

The only thing I can think of is a major backfire through the intake. It could be caused by timing, a burnt intake valve, air fuel mixture... Since then, has the same problem happened again?

Yes but I have taken my truck to a dealership and they are talking about a converter... Could that be true?

It could be if the converter is plugged.

Update:

Interestingly enough, you are not the only person having this problem. I have found another one and refered them to our postings. The Ford dealer found a leak in a steel hose going to the exhaust. Check out this posting I started with this customer. He is going to replace the EGR and they are going to check for back pressure (which could be a catalytic converter problem.

I had the same problem and it was the Cat.Conv. FYI...Ford has a 80,000mi or 8 year warranty on the Cat and some other parts. I had a 2004 with 74,500 miles so it was covered. Lucky me.

My Escape started missing, low power, and while I was driving, it blew a hole in the EGR steel housing big enough to stick a finger in. I replaced the EGR but this didn't help. I took it to the Dealer and they concluded that the Cat. Conv. was clogged. They replaced it 2 weeks ago and so far so good. But I personally have not fixed a problem like this.

I do remember seeing the same problem a couple years ago. It was related to back pressure.
