2001 Ford Escape Gear shift will not come out of Park

Last Wednesday I drove my car was fine. On Thursday went to drive it to work and gear shift would not come out of Park. It does have a rebuilt transmission. Would like to have an idea if it is a steering column issue or transmission issue.

Start by having the shift interlock control system checked out-are the brake lights working?
