2001 Ford Escape Gear selector

my gear selector was going from drive to nuetral yesterday, and today it cut off in drive and will not start or allow me to put it in park, Could the bushings in the linkage be bad?

That is possible yes. First inspect the linkage to ensure it is not getting kinked up or out of adjustment. Sometimes they will stretch overtime and cause this condition.
