when attempting to start it the smaller wire that is grounded to the fender smoked and now it will not start or attempt to start. It won't even turn over. What could I have done wrong?

Give me more info and I’ll try to help you
Small wire on the solenoid
Small wire is the signal from the ignition switch to start
runs throws the neutral safety switch first
Did you check both cables on the solenoid one coming from the battery always positive?
2nd wire going to the starter it should have positive only when you start

Yeah the small wire is grounded to the van (the one that smoked when trying to start it).
