I have a 2004 ford e-150 I was having problems with it going dead, so I replaced the battery. This did not fix the problem, so I pulled the alternator and had it tested and the regulator was bad and the rotor was in need of replacement. I put a new one on. Next problem it was misfiring and the check engine light was on. I had it read on a computer and it said #5 cylinder misfire. I replaced the coil pack. Now when you go out to start it sometime it will start and the next time it does not turn over enough to start. Today we went on a trip and the temp gauge started floating up down from hot all the way to cold. At this point the vehicle is warm. when the temp gauge would drop to cold it would run rough and when the temp gauge would go up to hot which it was not hot it would run fine as long as you got on the gas and not take easy. I replaced the CHT and the problem is the same. I am going to pull the codes today to see if it is the pcm. Any thoughts?

Does the engine crank slow when this happens?

As far as the temp gauge, you may have a thermostat sticking or a bad sending unit. Start by checking that and let me know what you find.
