1998 Ford E-150 4.2l 6 cylinder engine 120,000 mi.

The van had been running rough and losing antifreeze for a few months. Code for cylinder 6 misfire kept coming up - check engine light came on usually when running slowly, like when in traffic going about 15 mph. Local garage did 100k tune up, new plugs, then ejector cleaner when it still ran rough. Took it to the local Ford Truck dealer repair shop - they found antifreeze in the oil & replaced the engine with a Ford remanufactured one. When I picked it up from the shop it still had the same cylinder 6 misfire. Check engine light goes on after driving less than 1/2 hour & usually with slight acceleration while driving about 15 mph. The engine feels roughest while starting up slowly & driving slowly - seem fine at cruising speed on the freeway.

The Ford mechanic has tried: replaced engine & radiator, plug wires, coil, tested the on board computer, swapped injectors.

Any ideas would be appreciated!!

I had a truck that did this. I would suspect that the ignition modulator is at fault here. or the power distribution box. possibly too would be the reluctor under the dist.cap. look to see if the "points" on that "gear" looking thing are burnt or discolored any such thing and it is shot. try the cheapest and work up from there. Good luck
