1992 Ford E-Series Van transmission swap

I want to swap trans on this vehicle. The current trans still works but shifts like a hammer smash from 1 to 2.
I picked up a used trans from a salvage yard and they gave me the converter with it. My question. Should I switch the converter too or can I use the one in the vehicle?
