oil leaking

how can i tell when a freeze plug is bad on a 2000 ford crownvictoria with a v-8 engine.it starts but does not run at the full idel speed.what are the frist warning signs if any?

Youre asking about what? A freeze plug, an oil leak or idle problems? Freeze plugs an on the block...when they leak it's anti-freeze, not oil...
to test them use a pressure test gauge! As far as a low idle...is it low all the time? when hot, Cold?
