I have a 97 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor with 292,000 miles on the vehicle. It has a ford renewal 4.6 liter motor.

It was an old b/w before I painted it all black. We have no real history on the vehicle.
During inspection on the vehicle before I purchased it and noticed many new parts from brakes to fuel lines.

The car runs like a champ. Powerfull and passed emissions testing nicely. There is no slipping in the trans. I just got back from a 600 mile round trip.

About a month ago I was sitting in traffic and noticed a pinging/ clanking noise. A noise that almost made me think that it was main bearing or valve related.
After the car started to go, the noise and sweat on my forehead went away.

A week after that a neighbor noticed the sound after I put the car in park. Checking the engine, no noise, rather it was under the center of the car, aprox. Where the trans. Is.

Progressively the sound has been getting louder and more disgusting. Today I have had enough. After my trip, the car was making some noise when moving, and going uphill but as I stop the car, the clanking gets louder. After the car is pushed forward the sound is either gone or very faint. Loudest in neutral and in park and at slow speeds.

The sound is almost like a bolt tumbling over and over as if it was inside a clothes drier, still no loss of power or tightness in the trans. No smells, no leaks, and without a good guess whats up, should I go to a mechanic or the tranny shop? My guessing makes me think its the trans. But you would thing as good as it runs that couldn't be the case!

Hi there,

A mounting bolt from the torque converter may have come loose and it is being picked up and tossed around the bell housing, or the flex plate has cracked.

There will be an access cover to unbolt the torque converter. Remove and inspect for missing. Loose or damaged components.

I work at a tint shop (no lift), so I went to Meinike a block away to have the put it up on a lift so I or they could see or hear the problem.

I told the lady the problem and she asked if it was an automatic transmission. Of course, but I just wanted to get a diagnostic or a quick listen.

"We dont service auto transmissions" I was told, after explaining over and over that I just need a listen, I found myself alone and walking out the door.

As I was driving away the mechanics came out the roll away door and said "Hey. Thats a cat man, you need to get that fixed!"

I was trying to do that before I was sent away.

$110 fix woot!
