2001 Ford Crown Victoria oil pump

I recently installed a oil pump on my 01 crown vic, we put the car back together and it was still screaming from the oil pump. My question is, is it important to prime the oil pump before installing and could this be the reason for the guage still reading no oil pressure.

It is recommended to prime pump so it will pickup oil quickley
