What happened to that engine?? You just can't bolt in something that'll fit and drive off into the sunset.. at least without probably having some help from a tow truck.. these are no longer the good old days where we bolted 302 v8's into Pinto's and 350's into Vega's and proceeded to melt the rear tires to the rims... your pcm is calibrated specifically to run that set of controls with that engine currently in your car, yeah you could probably find something to fit, I don't know, chances are it'll run half-assed and be more headaches then it's worth,, if the engine is trashed, I'd search for a reasonably priced identical one, may take work on your part to transfer items, but at least you're minimizing the problems...

Suggested Repair

Replace the failed engine with a reasonably priced identical 2.0L rather than swapping in a different engine. The PCM is calibrated for the original engine, so a mismatched swap is likely to run poorly and create more problems; transfer needed parts from the old engine as required.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1997 Ford Contour with a 2.0L four-cylinder asked what other engines would fit, noting that the electronics, transmission, and other components were already gone. The expert advised against bolting in a different engine because the PCM is calibrated for the original setup and a swap would likely run poorly and cause more trouble. The recommendation was to find a reasonably priced identical engine and transfer necessary items.
