2000 Ford Contour transmission issue

Okay I have a 2000 contour when it gets over 40 mph it has troubles shifting into a higher gear. Will changing the fluid and filter on it fix the problem or am I doing more harm

Degraded fluid can cause problems a change is never a bad idea.
