My 1999 Ford Contour with 160,000 miles has a weak idle, like it may just die unless i push on the accleator, and when I am acclerating on the highway it feels like the car is dragging and missing some of its power. When i turn off the engine there is a chemical smell as well. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Clean out the idle air control valve, EGR valve and also clean the MAF sensor with an approved cleaner and see what happens-also test the throttle position sensor.
