I have a 1999 Ford Countour and recently the car has been stalling after some driving time. The car usually only stalls during warmer days and runs ok during the winter and cooler days. Before stalling completely the car will lose power and the accelerator has no affect on the vehicle, the car will roll at 5-10mph on flat ground, but if it is up a hill the car will stall. Also, if I stop during this power loss the car stalls. Also, when the car is running...warming up, it begins to smell like gasoline inside the car itself. Took it to a mechanic and was told that it would cost over $600 to repair, the fuel system needs to be replaced. Is there anything i can look at replacing myself.....fuel filter, pump, that may solve the problem without spending such money?
