1998 Ford Contour 4 cyl Automatic 117148 miles

I have 1998 ford contour, and it is iving me hard time right now. I don ' t know why the car does not turn in or takes a while to turn in. I just change the battery but this does not help. sometimes when I am at the stop sign or on a light , the car will just show on the board the break sign , and would stop.
Can somebody help me please figure it out what is going on?
