My Ford Contour SVT is at 87,000 miles and it's clutch is seriously slipping. I brought it in to get a price estimate for replacing the clutch and the total cost came to $1700! Is that right?

if it's slipping then most likely the pressure plate/disc is worn out. it takes around 10 labor hours to replace it which would add to around $500 in labor fees. a new clutch disc should be around $125..you shouldn't pay out more than $625 - 650, that is unless it is something more serious than just the pressure plate/disc..
