1996 Ford Contour my charging system

hi, my 1996 ford contour is having troouble charging. the altenator was tested and deemed good, and i might need a battery, but after replacing the altenator, the car shuts off after i disconnect the positive terminal from battery. i do however have freyed wires on the connection to the altenator main connection. how do i know what to do?

replacing the damaged wiring would be the best place to start at.
