1996 Ford Contour Fuel smell inside car.

I have a 1996 Ford Contour. When the engine is running i can smell fuel inside the car. I have looked all the fuel lines over and no leaks. Also no leaks from the gas tank. Under the back seat is the access for the fuel pump, again no leaks. I checked it with soapy water and a spray bottle. My mechanic told me that there is some sort of fuel vapor line that runs with my ERG system. It has also been taking for ever to start like its not getting gas, and once it starts it idle roughs. It drives fine. Could this be that fuel vapor line or something else?

Do you have a check engine light?

Check the fuel pressure regulator and the charcoal canister/purge solenoid

Yes the check engine light is on and the computer reads a EGR circuit fault. We cleared out the computer codes and it came back on with in a few minutes of restarting the car.

Have the DPFE-EGR system checked out thoroughly.
