Hi my ford contour I think it needs a new alternatorbut the car keeps bucking and banging expecially around power lines im not sure if it is the transmission because I drove it to and from Florida with no problems. I wanted to know if it could be the voltage regulator, If someone could also tell me what the voltage regulator does. Thanks

The voltage regulator is designed to limit the amount of power the alternator sends to the battery. As far as your description, it doesn't sound like it is related to the voltage regulator, battery, or alternator. Unless, however, the battery is going dead for you. Has the check engine light come on?

The check engine light is not on but the battery is dying and not holding a charge. The car is revving up while driving and not accelerating, not sure if this is transmission or something else.

Have you had the battery load tested? It may be bad. Most parts stores will check it for free.

Let me know.
