This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to revise the service procedure and the parts required.
ISSUE:
A "grinding" or "clashing" noise may be heard from the transaxle when shifting into 3rd gear and/or a high shift effort may be required to engage cold transaxle on some vehicles. These may be due to a deflected lubrication condition causing early 3rd gear wear or high input shaft preload causing high shift effort.
ACTION:
Rebuild input shaft, changing the axial lash and installing a revised shift fork. These actions will prevent early 3rd gear wear and reduce preload to zero. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
