1996 Ford Contour 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

is the alternator the only thing responsible for charging the battery or is there a relay switch or fuse that could contribute?

The alt is the only thing that produces the current to charge the battery, but the voltage regulator determines how much power the alt is allowed to create. What is the problem?
