Sudden downshift?

When I am driving at highway speeds my Bronco will sometimes suddenly try to downshift and quickly shifts back up, creating this loud bang sound and sudden jerk. It seems to be an intermittent problem. It does it for a while, and then stops with no pattern I can discern. I have checked the transmission fluid level and it's ok. I have not changed the transmission fluid as I was advised against it. I was told if you have not changed it previously, do not start now. Is my tranny doomed or is there something I can do to fix this problem?

Trust me I know exactly what you're going through. My 92 does the same thing but it's got 216k on it. I've been told the transmission is shot by people but others have told me a shift kit would fix it. You're probably going to want to take it to a transmission shop and have them diagnose it. Let me know how it goes will ya :) Good luck.

I have seen a bad TPS sensor cause this problem, here is how to swap it out to help fix the issue. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
