What happens if a thermostat is installed backwards? Will in not work at all, or will it just work, but not as well, potentially causing higher engine temps?

On a 93 you wouldn't be able to install it backwards without crushing it some.... spring end goes towards the block. Water flow because of the 16 lbs of pressure that builds up, would probably force it to close.
