fuel injected or carbureted motor?
For carb motors, a carburetor mounted gas filter is used. These filters screw into the float chamber. To replace one of these filters:
1.Wait until the engine is cold.
2.Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3.Place some absorbent rags under the filter.
4.Remove the hose clamp and slide the rubber hose from the filter.
CAUTION
It is possible for gasoline to spray in all directions when removing the hose! This rarely happens, but it is possible, so protect your eyes!
5.Move the fuel line out of the way and unscrew the filter from the carburetor.
To install:
6.Coat the threads of the new filter with non-hardening, gasoline-proof sealer and screw it into place by hand. Tighten it snugly with the wrench.
WARNING
Do not overtighten the filter! The threads in the carburetor bowl are soft metal and are easily stripped! You don't want to damage these threads!
7.Connect the hose to the new filter. Most replacement filters come with a new hose and clamps. Use them.
8.Remove the fuel-soaked rags, wipe up any spilled fuel and start the engine. Check the filter connections for leaks.
