1997 Ford Aspire problem with engine

Engine Cooling problem
1997 Ford Aspire Front Wheel Drive Automatic 94000 miles

heard a loud pop, charge light came on and the heater stopped heating. Engine started to overheat when idling and now the engine races then slows, then races then slows while in park.

Check the serpentine belt! Probably broke, this drives a/c, alt, power steering, and waterpump.
