When I attempted to take the starter out I didn't have enough room between the block and the drive shaft. Do I need to take the driveshaft loose or is there a better way to get the starter out?

thanks

I have a 93 and thought it was the starter, but changed the solenoid (behind battery in the engine compartment) and all was well. AWD Model which requires removal of front drive line and exhaust Y-pipe. my starter came out easily and you can see how by using this guide and video.

How do you remove the starter motor from a 1992 all wheel drive Aerostar? There is an exhaust pipe and transfer case drive line blocking the removal.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 4, 5 and 6

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Raise the vehicle and support it safely on jackstands.

Disconnect all cables and wires at the starter solenoid on the starter motor.

Remove the starter mounting bolts and lower the starter from the engine.

Fig. 4: Detach the wiring connectors from the starter motor, ...

Fig. 5: ... then, while supporting the starter motor, remove the starter mounting bolts

Fig. 6: Lower the starter motor out from under the engine-1991 3.0L engine shown, other engines similar

To install:

Position the new starter assembly to the engine block and start the mounting bolts in by hand.

Snug all bolts while holding the starter squarely against its mounting surface and fully inserted into the pilot hole. Tighten the mounting bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs. (21-27 Nm).

Reconnect the starter cables and wires to the starter motor. Tighten the screw and washer assemblies to 70-130 inch lbs. (8-15 Nm).

Lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.

When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles (16 km) or more for the PCM to relearn the strategy.

Hi Billy.

Follow the positive battery cable and it will run directly to the starter solenoid and then the large cable coming off the solenoid will run down to attach to the starter. ALWAYS disconnect the battery before starting work. You will have to remove 1 bolt on the back side of the starter to take the power cable off and there will be two bolts holding the starter onto the engine. - By the way, if you aren't SURE that the starter is bad, have the battery tested first. It's easier and usually FREE at most parts stores - they can usually bench test the starter also if you take it off the vehicle and into the store.
