Probably a deteriorated rubber line or some type of fitting in the fuel vapor system, newer cars, 96 +, incorporate a pressure or vacuum test every time the car is started and runs for a while, this test is used to check for the exact problem you're having, fuel issues. That's why on newer cars always make sure the gas cap is tight, if loose it could cause a code to be generated, most likely some sort of small leak detection code, which means a small vacuum or pressure leak is recognized by the pcm.
