went to get tune up and found out 2nd spark plug cylinder was bad, took car back in and was told ignition coil has to be replaced, i would like to know if this could have been tooken care of at the initial visit. also wanted to know if this is absolutely neccessary to turn off check engine light, stop my engine from shaking, and make my car run better.

If the coils is causing the misfire, yes it can help, if the plug doesnt fire, you will notice a "Skip" in the engine.
