1992 Ford Aerostar amp light on

The amp warning light on the dash came on today....and went off... and came on and so on. I'm thinking voltage refulator but don't know if there is a charge controller or other device in the alternator. How best to isolate the problem? Anything else to look for?

The regulator is part of the alt. Here is a how to for checking the alt:

Also, most parts stores will check it for free on the car.
